Though living in this so-called modern era, people are still fond of following customs. Among the most popular and tradition centered ceremony is the wedding. One common wedding custom and tradition that is usually followed is about the role and purpose of the bridesmaids or maid of honor. Another custom dictates the color of the bride’s dress, or how it should be made and that is should not be worn if it’s not yet the wedding day. There are actually a lot of customs related to wedding attendant roles originating hundreds of years ago. Now, you may wonder what the different bridesmaid customs are. Some wedding party traditions were traced back from the Roman and Anglo Saxon era. Some say these came from the Victorian era. A very important role of the bridesmaid of those times was to trick the evil spirits. Bridesmaids during those times wear the same color of dress as the bride so as to confuse some evil spirits planning to abduct the bride. People during that era maybe so afraid that some rejected suitors might abduct the bride so that the wedding will not be successfully completed. And so, they made this tradition to trick those persons planning to do any evil deed. Another known wedding tradition originates from Poland. Bridesmaids here are highly involved in the beauty and regimen of the bride, and make sure that the bride will look lovely during the entourage of her wedding ceremony. Also in Poland, the night before the wedding, bridesmaids help in preparing the bride in undoing the bride’s long braid. After that, they join the bride’s mother and sisters make two new braids to symbolize the bride’s unmarried status. The braids are undone again after the wedding ceremony to symbolize the bride’s new married status. People in Greece also have a unique custom where the maid of honor plays a role in giving good luck to the couple. This bridesmaid usually makes gifts of cake or bread with a hidden coin inside them for good luck. She also provides gifts of basil, cotton, and rice for good luck. In Finland, the bridesmaids are assigned to place a crown on the bride’s head, blindfold her, and spin her in a circle of friends. The friend that the bride happened to face when she stopped spinning is said to be the next to marry. Today in the United States, bridesmaids traditionally throw a bridal shower or bachelorette party for the bride, help her to get dressed and be her most beautiful for her big day, and proceed down the aisle before her during the wedding ceremony. They are there for moral support and encouragement. If you are the lucky chosen one to be in the wedding party of your very best girl friend, you can also follow these traditions.
