Bridesmaid Etiquette

A wedding is incomplete without the bridesmaids. They are the single attendant who may be a sister, a relative, or a very close friend of the bride. This makes the presence of the bridesmaids meaningful to the marriage rite.

However, the roles of the bridesmaids do not simply end there since they also have to serve a sensible purpose. Since the bridesmaids are persons close to bride’s heart, they are also expected to act as a confidant and as an adviser during the planning of the wedding. They also might be needed to help on the menial jobs that are required to complete the wedding plan. Since bridesmaids are important part of the wedding, both in planning and in the ceremony, they are then expected to observe some etiquette.

A bridesmaid is expected to pay for her dress including the shoes. She is expected to wear whatever type of dress the bride chooses without complaining, even if she thinks it is unattractive, and attend any dress fittings. The bridesmaid’s jewelry may be given to her as a gift from the bride. Similarly, bridesmaids might be expected to give advice for the decorations or any preparation that are needed for the wedding when asked. Definitely, they are responsible in providing moral support for the couple at all times.

Bridesmaids are also expected to help in planning the bridal shower, although the bulk of this falls to the maid of honor. It is in fact appropriate for them to contribute for the food expenses, venue, and decorations. Similarly, it is also proper for them to help in planning the bachelorette party.

Ideally, bridesmaids should know some information about the couple and be able to detail them when asked by someone. Like for instance, where to deliver the gifts for the couple and the changes on the names. It is also better for them to know when the couple will come back from their honeymoon break.

During the wedding ceremony, the maid of honor will be the one to hold the bouquet of the bride. She will be escorted by the best man. The other bridesmaids, who follow behind the maid of honor, will be escorted by the groomsmen.

During the wedding reception, bridesmaids may be expected to greet the visitors in a receiving line, direct them to the guestbook, and dance with the groomsmen during the designated songs. They are also supposed to assist during the special moments, such as primping and fluffing the bride during the photography session.

If you are the one getting married, think of everything your maid of honor and other special ladies are doing to make your day perfect, and remember to thank them with bridesmaid gifts.
